8.  WILLIS COLFAX3 PRESTON (ISAAC2, PRESTON FROM1 ENGLAND) was born March 1868 in Manito(SpringLake), Illinois, and died Bet. 1910 - 1912 in Ponca City, Oklahoma.  He married EMMA GIBESON October 28, 1890 in Pekin, Tazewell County, Illinois.  She was born March 04, 1870 in Holton, Kansas, and died July 24, 1941 in Creve Coeur, Illinois. Tazwell County. 314 Albert Street..

Notes for WILLIS COLFAX PRESTON:

Willis had been married to Emma for nine years as of the 1900 census. According to the 1900 census Page(623), Volume 150 Ed 140 Sheet 5 Line 85, Willis listed his father as being born in Ohio and his mother as being born in Illinois. He listed his age at the time of the census at 32 years. He indicated he was born in Illinois in March 1868, in Tazwell County and Fondulac Township, East Peoria. He lists his wife as Emma Preston. He indicated she was born in March 1870 in Kansas. He listed the other members of the family as Johnny(John Issac Preston), born in June 1891 who was nine at the time of the census and was born in Illinois, Bessie(Bessie Mae Preston) who was born in April 1894 in Illinois and was six at the time of the census, and Willis who was born in February 1896 in Illinois and was four at the time of the census. He listed that Emma's parents were both born in Ohio.

From the Notes of Elsie Barker - Willis died sitting beside a wagon wheel of a heart attack on Ponca City, Oklahoma. The Elks lodge there helped the family get back to Kansas and then to Peoria, Illinois.

Willis Preston was a Blacksmith who covered a regular route(circuit) in a covered wagon - somewhere along the way, he met Emma(Gibeson) Preston and married her. Probably in Kansas - where she lived on a farm I believe near Manhattan, Kansas. As the children came along - Kin(Willis) and my mother Bessie became as good at driving the wagon as their dad. My mother(Bessie) held the horses during shoeing - helping with the relatives farm work - she had an Uncle Charlie whose land came to him by marrying an Indian squaw - and she delighted in racing the indian ponies on the reservation - usually winning the race. When the harvest was in - there was usually a barn dance where her dad(Willis) played the fiddle.

While they were moving down in Oklahoma, her father fell over dead beside the evening campfire. The good friends of Ponca City came out to help - and the members of the Elks Lodge helped to get him buried and the family headed back to Gram's(Emma's) in-laws in Kansas. Later, I believe they were helped by Uncle Jim(James M.) to come back to Peoria, Illinois - and get on with their lives. My Uncle Bud(Robert C.) became a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge in gratitude.

Notes for EMMA GIBESON:

Lizzy Gibeson was a sister to Emma.

Emma's death certificate lists her as being born in Holton, Kansas. Holton is in Jackson County which is in the NorthEast part of the state.

We have an old book with the following written in it as well:

Emma Gibeson

Bill's Creek, Kansas

Inquiries into where Bill's Creek was, gleaned this response:

From:    Mary Ann Thompson

Greg, Liz Boltz forwarded your question. Bill's Creek was in Chase County, around 1871. It seems to have disappeared as quickly as founded and I cannot find a map with it on there so I don't know what part of Chase County. Hope this helps. mat.

Further inquiries into where Bill's Creek were done once I learned that Emma came from Holton. I found mention of Bill's Creek in William G. Cutler's History of the State of Kansas, JACKSON COUNTY, Part 10, CEDAR TOWNSHIP. Find this at: http://www.ukans.edu/carrie/kancoll/books/cutler/jackson/jackson-co-p1.html

It stated there:

MICHAEL BAKER, farmer, P. O. North Cedar, was born in Greenbrier County, Va., November 15, 1813. In 1833, he went to Saline County, and afterwards Platte County, Missouri, where he was engaged in selling goods and farming, remaining until 1856 when he came to Kansas with a stock of goods and started a store at the mouth of Bill's Creek. In 1858 he went to Pike's Peak and engaged in mining for two years, returning to Jackson County where he has since resided. In 1840 he was married to Miss Julia Ann Mayo; she died in 1842 leaving one son. In 1862 he was again married to Sarah Isaacs. He has always been an out-and-out Democrat.

Also found in: JACKSON COUNTY, Part 2, MUNICIPAL TOWNSHIPS.

Franklin.-- In the east central portion of the county is the township named after the statesman and philosopher - Benjamin Franklin. When organized, December 15, 1856, it contained 84 sections; its present area is 48. In November, 1853, N. D. Lewis, a native of Ohio, but a long-time resident of Platte County, Missouri, laid a foundation for a claim on Elk, near the mouth of Bill's Creek. April 2, 1854, he landed with his family, his children consisting of one daughter and four sons, and now where there was then a howling wilderness, with red men as companions, Mr. Lewis has a magnificent farm of some 600 acres, over 350 of which is in a high state of cultivation, the whole enclosed with good rail and hedge fences. His dwelling is worth $5,000, and his barn nearly as much. In the summer of 1855 Michael Baker and a partner, a Mr. Smythe, brought in a stock of dry goods and groceries and put them in a log building owned by Mr. Lewis, and for a few years this was quite a trading point for the settlers and Indians. In the autumn of 1855 Phineas Skinner, from near Camden Point, Platte Co, Mo., drove a large lot of hogs from his home to this township, and butchering them sold the pork to the Indians, and while here he decided upon locating here with a colony. Returning to Missouri, he came out in the spring of 1856 with quite a number of colonists, and had arrangements made to improve several quarter sections of land, proposing to divide accumulations at the end of five years. A widow, by the name of Cole, and her family were among the immigrants. For her Mr. Skinner built a house, and the men he employed boarded with her. He laid out a town two miles west of Holton, called it Elk City, built a stone house, placed in it goods to the amount of $4,000, and put a son-in-law - Mr. Croysdale - in charge of it. He had not been in very good health, and one day starting out for a ride on his mule, for the apparent purpose of looking after his varied business, one of the farm hands, going to the spring for water, saw the mule tied to a bush on the bank of a ravine near the spring, and found the body of Mr. Skinner lying dead at the spring, his face submerged in the water. His death caused a change in the plans that had been so extensively made, and the agreements he had made were brought to an end. His remains were taken to Missouri for interment. Some of the store goods were taken back; tradition has it that some were used by the Land troops, and Dr. Henry Dent Oden made a purchase of the remainder, and with John J. Preston, his son-in-law, the store was continued at this place. Dr. Oden was a native of Kentucky, and had settled upon a farm four miles west of Holton. He was a member of the Lecompton Constitutional Convention, and was one of the leading Pro-slavery men. He went to California and Oregon, and died in 1879.

Mr. Preston was a native of Indiana. Emigrated to Kentucky; from there he came to Platte County, Mo., in 1843 first settled in Kansas in Nemaha County, on the old Ft. Leavenworth and Ft. Laramie road, northwest of Granada, and came to Elk Creek in April, 1856. He ran a saw-mill at Elk City for a few years, and furnished the lumber for the first shanty that was built on the town site of Holton, which was a store building, put up by Capt. William, F. Creitz and his brother Lewis. This mill was afterwards purchased by Peter Reiderer, who moved it to the northwest quarter of Section 1, Township 7, Range 15, where now, as the proprietor of the Elk Mills, he has a property assessed at $10,000, having both steam and water-power.

Also found on the same page:

I. C. Hitchcock was the Trustee of Franklin Township in 1868; H. J. Snyder in 1876 and 1882. J. A. Scott, the County Treasurer, was Township Treasurer for five years. Elk, Banner and Bill's creeks furnish excellent timber and a fine supply of water for this township.

Notes for JOHN ISSAC PRESTON:

There was a common belief at the time that a goat placed in the room of a person with tuberculosis would absorb the t.b.  John tried this to save his wife Marvel but to no avail.

From the Notes of Elsie Barker - John's nickname was "Kin".

Marvel was a long time friend of John's. They were married only briefly because they knew she was dying of tuberculosis. The marriage was to grant her dying wish.  John became a nomad after Marvel's death - although he always wrote to my mother (Bess) oftem enough to keep in touch.  Years later, he married a woman who covered him with a large insurance policy - and she arranged for her boyfriend to shoot him. The police of Cleavland or Cincinnati notified Bud(Robert C. Preston) that he was in the hospital under police protection. Bud brought him home and he stayed with Gram(Emma Preston) or Bud after that in Peoria, and then Creve Coeur.

James became mentally disturbed. There were two commonly held beliefs as to the reason for this. The first was that he contracted the measles at an early age and still went to school with them. He spent years at Lincoln state hospital until it was closed by the state. He then resided in a home in Alido, Illinois. The address was: 1006 S.E. Third St. Alido, Illinois 61231.
